De ce traitement elle en fait une carrière et un projet politique: Annette créer le premier maillot de bain moulant pour femmes afin de lui permettre d'être plus efficace contre ses partenaires masculins. Elle est arrêtée pour «indécence», mais mena le débat à terme en argumentant pour l'égalité des chances des compétiteurs. Toujours, elle profitera personnellement de ces moments formateurs et de ces revendications : son traitement de natation l'initie à un sport auquel elle excelle et est la seule femme à compétitionner contre les nageurs masculins, de son invention de mode pratique elle en fait un commerce, de sa popularité en tant que nageuse, féministe et fouteuse de trouble elle infiltre Hollywood et le monde du spectacle, etc. Et nous, d'une seule existence, nous en tirons un confort sur la plage, la nage synchronisée, et de la visibilité pour les athlètes féminines.
